Executive Director, Nantucket Book Foundation

The Nantucket Book Foundation (NBF) is seeking a dynamic, imaginative, and accomplished leader to serve as its next Executive Director. The Executive Director will work with the NBF Board of Directors and staff to provide strategic vision, direction, development, and administrative leadership for the Nantucket Book Foundation and its core programs, including the annual Nantucket Book Festival.

NBF’s mission is to celebrate the transformative power of words to inspire, illuminate, educate, and connect us to each other by building a community of readers and writers on Nantucket and beyond.


NBF is a 501(c)3 founded in 2012 with an annual operating budget of approximately $400,000 including in kind donations. NBF’s core programs include: the annual Nantucket Book Festival, Visiting Authors program for Nantucket Schools, Young Writer Awards, Page to Stage with the Dreamland, Nantucket Book Mobile, and our virtual program “At Home with Authors”. NBF is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors and is an equal opportunity employer.

Position Description:

Under general oversight from the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the professional management of the NBF and for promoting the organization’s role in connecting authors and readers. The Executive Director will move the organization forward in the continuing development and implementation of goals that reflect NBF’s mission and ongoing strategic planning process.

The Executive Director provides overall leadership for strategic plan implementation, organizational development, financial oversight and operations, fundraising, events and volunteer management, educational programs, and marketing and communications. As the public face of the organization, the Executive Director serves as NBF’s spokesperson.


Board Development

  • Work closely with the NBF Executive Committee to support and maintain a strong, balanced Board of Directors and committees.
  • Cultivate the Board of Directors’ engagement in our programs, strategic planning, resource allocation and financial support.


  • Sustain and strengthen a diverse funding base, including corporate, foundation, and individual giving.
  • Raise the visibility of the organization through the continued development and implementation of signature events geared to NBF’s various constituencies.
  • Implement creative strategies to increase our donor base and expand public awareness of the NBF’s work and value to the Nantucket community.
  • Cultivate and steward donors and board members.

Program Planning, Operations/Administration

  • Manage and/or oversee all aspects of the annual Nantucket Book Festival, including: author contracts, author travel and lodging, author Festival itineraries, venue and vendor contracts, sponsor and donor benefits, volunteer scheduling, promotion including the printed events program, advertising in local and regional media, merchandise sales, and attendee engagement.
  • Oversee the recruiting, training, and supervising of volunteers to serve on committees and to execute events, such as NBF’s annual Nantucket Book Festival.
  • In concert with the Board of Directors, set priorities and gain consensus for program goals and objectives and implement programming accordingly.
  • Supervise staff and oversee NBF's advisors.
  • Ensure accuracy of financial transactions and donor database (NeonCRM).
  • Anticipate organizational needs and seeks opportunities to expand our impact.

Fiscal Management

  • Ensure that NBF is fiscally sound and establish rigorous accountability standards for grants and budget tracking.
  • Direct financial activities and make decisions based on plans and policies developed in concert with the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee all bookkeeping, accounting, and financial activities.
  • Secure contributions, contracts, grants, and in-kind donations to support NBF projects and services.
  • Present annual budget, and quarterly financial reports to Board of Directors.
  • Engage with the Treasurer and Board of Directors in financial planning, accounting, banking and annual audit.

Marketing, Communications and Public Relations

  • Oversee the development of promotional and communications strategies.
  • Lead public relations efforts and serves as NBF spokesperson.

Qualifications and Characteristics:


  • Experience in management, public and board relations, fund-raising and development.
  • Nonprofit leadership experience is preferred.

This is a full-time position. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
