Trick Mirror

Jia Tolentino, the author of TRICK MIRROR, reflections on self delusions, writes intricate sentences that turn into remarkable, prescient paragraphs, and after chewing on them, you get her entire glorious gist. She's a powerhouse thinker!

She is a contributing writer to The New Yorker, which is how I came to know her work, but this book contains all new material. Because these essays are wonderfully lengthy, I chose to read only one each evening. She never pontificates; her essays are loaded with information, well organized to support her conclusions. The breadth of the topics she takes on is broad and she has a terrific (sometimes terrifying) sense of humor, often aimed at herself.

My favorite essays? "The I in the Internet", "We Come from Old Virginia", and "I Thee Dread". Tolentino made me check some of my convictions and assumptions. I love when a writer does that, and she does it so incredibly well!
