EVAN THOMAS, a graduate of Phillips Academy, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia School of Law , has been since 1991 the assistant managing editor at Newsweek. Among his numerous awards is the National Magazine Award in 1998 for Newsweek’s coverage of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He has also published a number of books of U.S. history and biography, including Robert Kennedy: His Life (2000), John Paul Jones: Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy (2004), and The War Lovers: Roosevelt, Lodge, Hearst, and the Rush to Empire, 1898 (2010.) Ike's Bluff, which appeared last year, explains the strategies President Eisenhower pursued to avoid direct conflict with the Soviet Union while maintaining a strong U.S. influence internationally. Evan Thomas currently teaches writing and journalism at Princeton University.
